Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa is being queried to explain the source of the money through which he bought items that he donated to his constituents on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Members of the press that attended the function were told that the donation was worth K23 million. The items included an ambulance said to have cost him K9 million; 300 bicycles worth K11 million and two motorcycles at K3 million.<\/p>\n
But other commentators on some forums including Members of Parliament forum argue that the K23 million figure is on the lower side as an Iveco vehicle could cost around K38 million.<\/p>\n
Chancellor College Political Scientist, Mustapha Hussein, said Nankhumwa needed to be accountable.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause of the huge amount of money, one needs to explain. There must be evidence that the money is coming from his pocket, otherwise the amount that has been spent raises suspicion because comparing to earnings there should be an initiative to compare how much he gets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the same, Malawi Economic Justice Network (Mejn) Executive Director, Dalitso Kubalasa, said while it was a noble duty, it would be fair to be transparent about where the money had come from.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is always fair and proper to come out clean to say where the money is coming from to dispel any rumour. Such money could be part of some money laundering activities so it\u2019s fair to be transparent otherwise a spirit of sharing is a welcome development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In a telephone interview, Nankhumwa refused to comment on the matter, saying he sees nothing wrong for a Member of Parliament to make donations to his constituency.<\/p>\n
On the legislators\u2019 forum, Nankhumwa is defended by his party colleagues, who say he is an enterprising MP and has the capacity to make such a donation.<\/p>\n
