Blantyre and Mzuzu city councils are Monday expected to elect mayors for the two cities who will be in office until 2019.<\/p>\n
The incumbent, Noel Chalamanda, and William Mkandawire of Blantyre and Mzuzu cities respectively are hoping for re-election as they are seeking for the second term of office.<\/p>\n
Blantyre City Council Public Relations Manager, Anthony Kasunda, said all preparations for the elections are done. He could, however, not disclose the names of the councillors aspiring for the position.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will have 31 council members who are eligible to vote. These are elected councillors and the MPs [Members of Parliament] but all the names of the contesting councillors will be announced on the voting day,\u201d Kasunda said.<\/p>\n
However, we have established that incumbent Chalamanda of Blantyre City Central Ward will face three challengers. They include his deputy Wild Ndipo of Chigumula Ward, Lewis Ngalande of Misesa Ward and George Chipwete of Soche West Ward.<\/p>\n
In Mzuzu, Mkandawire of Mchengautuba East Ward, who is contesting on the People\u2019s Party ticket will face Democratic Progressive Party\u2019s Yona Mkandawire of Masasa Ward.<\/p>\n
Current deputy Mayor Frazer Chunga of Mzilawaigwe Ward will face MCP\u2019s Katawa Ward Councillor, Alexander Mwakikunga, and Chiwabvi Ward councillor Patrick Ng\u2019oma of the People\u2019s Party.<\/p>\n
Mzuzu City Council\u2019s Public Relations Officer, Karen Msiska, said all arrangements are in order in preparation for the polls.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo far those are the names of candidates that have expressed interest to contest, if others are also interested we will know on the voting day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Msiska said 16 eligible councillors and MPs will cast their vote.<\/p>\n
Lilongwe City Council was the first to conduct its polls on Thursday that saw Chigoneka Ward Councillor, Desmond Bikoko of the Malawi Congress Party, becoming the capital city\u2019s Mayor.<\/p>\n
Luchenza Municipality has also a new Mayor in Councilor Brighton Baluwa of Namadzi Ward following the polls that were held on Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
