Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) has won the International Hockey Federation (FIH)\u2019s 2016 Pablo Negro Award worth K285 million ($400, 000).<\/p>\n
The money will go towards the installation of an astro-turf and floodlights at the National Hockey Stadium located next to Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
Ham Vice-President, Krishna Achuthan, broke the news on his return from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates where he received the award on behalf of the association.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is something big and a boost to the development of hockey in the country. We will now be able to host international competitions, thereby enhancing the game,\u201d Achuthan said, adding that Ham will bid for the hosting of the 2021 Presidents Cup.<\/p>\n
According to FIH\u2019s regulations, the installation must take place within six months after the award.<\/p>\n
Ham was nominated for the award after submitting an application at the African Hockey Federation (AFH) in 2015.<\/p>\n
Malawi was the only African country that applied for the award. The award is given out every two years.<\/p>\n
The award, given to member associations that come up with innovative hockey development programmes, is part of FIH\u2019s drive to celebrate the sport\u2019s success stories.<\/p>\n
The award is dedicated to Pablo Negre, who was a renowned hockey administrator, who dedicated his life to the sport and FIH.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, this year\u2019s edition of the Presidential Cup cup will take place in Arusha, Tanzania from February 19 to 27.<\/p>\n
