{"id":38465,"date":"2017-01-05T11:28:39","date_gmt":"2017-01-05T09:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=38465"},"modified":"2017-01-05T11:28:45","modified_gmt":"2017-01-05T09:28:45","slug":"murekezi-extradition-hearing-commences-on-january-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/01\/05\/murekezi-extradition-hearing-commences-on-january-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Murekezi extradition hearing commences on January 16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lilongwe Magistrate\u2019s Court has set January 16 this year as the date when it will start hearing arguments from the State and defence lawyers as government seeks to extradite Rwandan Genocide suspect, Vincent Murekezi.<\/p>\n<p>State counsel, Steven Kayuni, confirmed to have delivered all the files of evidence against Murekezi to the court and defence lawyers yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have submitted the files to both the court and the defence lawyers today and the court has set 16 January as the date for hearing of,\u201d Kayuni said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the defence lawyers, Gift Katundu, said they have received the files and they will appear before the court at 9 o\u2019clock in the morning of the set date.<\/p>\n<p>The development means the court has now provided ground for the State to prove that Murekezi is indeed wanted in Rwanda for his alleged connection to the Rwandan Genocide of 1994 and for Murekezi to prove his innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Murekezi, who holds two Malawian passports with different names of Murekezi and Banda plus a citizenship, is also accused of dodging a corruption case that Malawi Revenue Authority and Anti- Corruption Bureau raised against him in 2008 and it is yet to be known how the state will proceed in this particular case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lilongwe Magistrate\u2019s Court has set January 16 this year as the date when it will start hearing arguments from the State and defence lawyers as government seeks to extradite Rwandan Genocide suspect, Vincent Murekezi.
