The newly-opened Ntcheu Bus Depot is proving to be a cash cow for the Ntcheu District Council with weekly revenue said to be in excess of K500,000.<\/p>\n
Ntcheu District Council Director of Public Works, Ellis Tembo, told journalists on a tour of Local Development Fund (LDF) projects that since the new bus terminal was officially inaugurated last month, the council\u2019s revenue base has substantially grown.<\/p>\n
Tembo said while the council was collecting weekly revenues of K250,000 from the old bus terminal, the new terminal has doubled the amount.<\/p>\n
The revenue is mainly generated from buses and minibuses that pay each time they branch off to the terminal to pick or drop passengers.<\/p>\n
\u201cMinibuses pay K700 and buses give us K1,500. We also collect revenue from renting out kiosks and paying toilets. Vendors who ply their trade in the terminal also pay us,\u201d Tembo said.<\/p>\n
He disclosed that the council will put up more kiosks at the terminal since it has enough space to accommodate other structures.<\/p>\n
LDF Head of Communications Unit, Booker Matemvu, commended the council for ensuring that the terminal was in full operation.<\/p>\n
He said the terminal had the potential to generate more revenue if all the space inside was put to maximum use.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is what we want councils to be doing. They must have structures to help them generate resources by themselves,\u201d Matemvu explained.<\/p>\n
The bus terminal was officially opened by Local Government Minister, Kondwani Nankhumwa, on December 16 last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
