{"id":38385,"date":"2017-01-04T10:55:14","date_gmt":"2017-01-04T08:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=38385"},"modified":"2017-01-04T10:55:15","modified_gmt":"2017-01-04T08:55:15","slug":"post-harvest-loses-still-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/01\/04\/post-harvest-loses-still-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-harvest loses still high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Post harvest losses are still high with recent statistics indicating that the country is losing more than 30 percent of its maize crop to post-harvest loses annually.<\/p>\n<p>A Researcher and Epistemologist, Trust Dunga, says the nation, therefore, needs to adopt modern grain storage and treatment measures to minimize the losses.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dunga, most of the crop is lost during harvesting, drying, handling and transportation stages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFarmers continue to cry foul almost every year as output from production does not tally investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly, the farmers lose produce after harvest and there is a need to explore alternative means of safeguarding the grain after harvest,\u201d Dunga said.<\/p>\n<p>And Civil Society Agriculture Network (Cisanet) said post-harvest losses have substantially increased in the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>According to Cisanet Executive Director, Tamani Nkhono-Mvula, the problem has become rampant in the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very big problem and has always been there.
