Veteran striker Esau Kanyenda\u2014 who belongs to an exclusive club of long-serving Malawian footballers\u2014has said he is far from calling it time at South Africa Premiership side, Polokwane City.<\/p>\n
The former Dwangwa United striker has played professional football for 18 years\u2014and is among the longest Malawian footballers alongside the likes of John Maduka, Ernest Mtawali and Patrick Mabedi.<\/p>\n
However, this season Kanyenda has seen little action at City, who are fourth on the South Africa league table with 21 points, four behind leaders, Cape Town City.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a contract running up to June next year, but I will see what will happen in January,\u201d he said yesterday when asked about his conspicuous absence from City\u2019s starting XI.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been out of the squad for some games, but it was all due to flu. I should be back soon. I hope to keep on playing for the rest of the season. The coach [Luc Eymael] wanted to make me his assistant but the chairman [Joel Mogaladi] is against this. I had to respect his decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mogaladi respects Kanyenda as he steered City from the National First Division to the top-flight league in 2013 when he was named Player of the Year.<\/p>\n
The former Flames\u2019 striker had a successful career with Jomo Cosmos, Rostov and FC Lokomotiv Russia where he came so close to an appearance in the European Champions League.<\/p>\n
Kanyenda said he was encouraged by the exploits of fellow veterans such as Be Forward Wanderers\u2019 Vales Kamzere, who recently came out of retirement to steer the Nomads to Fisd Challenge Cup glory.<\/p>\n
