The Lilongwe Memon Association (LMA) at the weekend donated money, rice and clothes to over 2,100 families living in flood victims\u2019 camps in Traditional Authority (T\/A) Mwambo in Zomba.<\/p>\n
According to LMA chairperson Haroon Sacranie, an appeal was made to the Memon community in the capital city to contribute towards the rehabilitation and support of victims of floods that ravaged some parts of the country late last year and early this year.<\/p>\n
When they learnt about the disaster, Sacranie, who is also a World Memon Organisation (WMO) trustee, rallied LMA members to begin a fund-raising initiative.<\/p>\n
Apart from funds that were raised locally through the campaign, Sacranie said WMO also sent a container of rice and clothes to support the initiative.<\/p>\n
He said the Association of Sunni Madrasahs (Asum) members also played a significant role through fund-raising and being involved in the logistics.<\/p>\n
\u201cMonths after the floods, people in T\/A Mwambo are still living in squalid conditions and struggling for food and shelter,\u201d observed Sacranie when they reached the area to present the donation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn response to this humanitarian crisis, the Memon Community in Lilongwe heeded this outcry and here we are to work together to alleviate the hardships that our fellow Malawians faced during this calamity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is only when one goes to visit these victims that one realises how much assistance is actually needed. It really touches our hearts,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Sacranie then thanked LMA trustees and members, and Asum relief staff who had travelled from Lilongwe to assist in the distribution of the items.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would also like to thank WMO in South Africa for showing compassion and support in this time of dire need,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
