Reception seems the natural destination. Not with Times Television.

Launched on the strength of hope on December 11 2013, Times Television clocked three years yesterday with more in the bag than it hoped for: a Media Institute of Southern Africa- Malawi Chapter ‘Television Station of the Year’ accolade and hope for a promising future among those who have made the dream come true.

And, so, it was that when Times Group management and staff members from all the subsidiaries met yesterday, to commemorate Times Television’s anniversary, the mood was festive: it takes teamwork to make a baby grow!

Indeed, as Times Group Managing Director, Leonnard Chikadya, put it to the jubilant staff members, everything has been down to thinking ahead of time.

“We are all about innovation. We are all about creativity,” Chikadya said.

Chikadya added that winning the inaugural Misa-Malawi television station of the year award is testimony that the Times TV has lived up to viewers’ expectations.

He, however, urged staff members not to sit on their laurels, saying there is room for improvement. He cited the introduction of films on Malawi’s number one television station as an area where there is demand from the public.

He added that challenges also abound but found comfort in the biblical verse that says “Everything will come to pass”.

On his part, Times Group Editor-in-Chief, George Kasakula, observed that Times Television has become known for the quality and originality of its content.

“According to feedback from viewers, we are doing well in terms of content. The only challenges they have cited are technical issues,” Kasakula said.

And, like Chikadya, he asked staff not to sleep over their relative success.

“To be on top is easy but to stay there is not easy,” Kasakula said.

And, as if to show that Times Group— which has a number of subsidiaries, including Times PrintPack, Times Courier, Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL)— Chikadya awarded The Sunday Times columnist Madalitso Musa for bringing readers back to The Sunday Times after the death of award-winning columnist, Raphael Tenthani.

The late Tenthani became a darling to readers due to his The Sunday Times column, ‘Muckraking on Sunday’. After his death, a void was created and Times Group management decided to transfer ‘Tales of Time’ column, from The Daily Times, to The Sunday Times.

Musa was, inevitably, lost for words: “Being compared to someone as great as Ralph Tenthani is humbling. When you are recognised, you are encouraged to work hard.”

Apart from its own channel, Times Television also beams on Zuku Satellite Television, Gotv, Azam TV and Star Sat.

At three years, a typical Malawian child is not old enough to be enrolled in primary school.
