Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has disclosed that International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will send officials to inspect the yet-to-be-opened Bingu National Stadium to check whether it can host major athletics events.<\/p>\n
The association\u2019s President Godfrey Phiri attended a three-day special congress in France where he lobbied for Malawi to host major events.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was in France for three days where I took advantage of the special congress to enlighten top IAAF officials that Malawi now has state-of-art facility. They have since welcomed our proposal and if all goes according to plans, then they will come in January to inspect the venue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to IAAF requirements, a standard athletics venue should have eight-lane running track as well as an alternative upper stadium venue with a minimum of a six-lane running track.<\/p>\n
Phiri is convinced that Bingu National Stadium can pass the test and be certified fit.<\/p>\n
The facility\u2019s Operations Manager, Eric Ning\u2019ang\u2019a, said they would welcome IAAF officials to inspect the venue.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have no doubts that BNS can be certified fit to host major athletics events,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Bingu National Stadium was constructed by Chinese Contractor with a concessional loan from the Chinese Government to the tune of $65 million (about K29 billion) payable in 20 years with a grace period of seven years and an annual interest rate of two percent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
