{"id":36910,"date":"2016-12-06T11:03:37","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T09:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=36910"},"modified":"2016-12-06T11:03:37","modified_gmt":"2016-12-06T09:03:37","slug":"thousands-march-against-abortion-homosexuality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/12\/06\/thousands-march-against-abortion-homosexuality\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands march against abortion, homosexuality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of Malawians in major cities have turned out for demonstrations against plans allegedly by the government to legalise abortion and homosexuality in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called Citizen March for Life and Family is spearheaded by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) and the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM).<\/p>\n<p>The pro-life marches, held under the theme, \u2018Lighting the Candle\u2019, have attracted people from different denominations who are united in their stand against abortion and homosexuality.<\/p>\n<p>However, the government has indirectly accused the churches of jumping the gun after it denied it has drafted a bill for termination of pregnancies which is ready for presentation in Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued on the eve of the march, Minister of Information and Communications Technology Malisen Ndau clarified that what is in place is a report that was prepared by the Malawi Law Commission, which recommended the government to develop a new law on abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, the law on abortion is governed by the Penal Code.
