Human rights body, Amnesty International, on Saturday launched the global \u2018Write for Rights\u2019 campaign with the call on Malawi\u2019s President Peter Mutharika to protect rights of people with albinism.<\/p>\n
Write for Rights, which is held annually, is the biggest global human rights event.<\/p>\n
According to Amnesty International, human rights supporters across the world wrote 3.7 million letters, messages, emails and tweets last year, a development which culminated \u201cin successful outcomes in a number of cases \u2013 including the release of Albert Woodfox, held for 43 years in solitary confinement, and Phyoe Phyoe Aung and other student activists held in Myanmar\u201d.<\/p>\n
Amnesty International\u2019s Write for Rights Campaigner, May Carolan, said in a statement released on Saturday that the advocacy campaign\u2019s first focus is 10-year-old Malawian child with albinism, Annie Alfred.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur first case this year is Annie Alfred from Malawi. Annie is 10 and hopes to become a nurse one day. But she is at grave risk of being murdered, abducted or sold to be killed because she has albinism. In Malawi, the hair, body parts and bones of people with albinism are used in witchcraft.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese body parts are so highly sought after, they have triggered a wave of abductions and brutal killings. In 2015 alone, there were 45 reports of actual or attempted murder and abduction. People like Annie have nowhere safe to go. It isn\u2019t just criminals who will kidnap them, but family members, too. Annie and others like her need your help to get the full protection of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carolan adds that information about a few incredible individuals and communities who need other people\u2019s help to enjoy their rights will be shared during the next two weeks with the aim of promoting human rights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
