Police in Ntchisi have said adolescent mothers and their children are likely to live in poverty and contribute less to the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n
Ntchisi Police Station Women Network coordinator Joana Baluti said this on Friday last week during an anti-early marriages campaign meeting at Kanjiwa Community Day Secondary School in the district.<\/p>\n
The meeting was organised to inspire girls to prevent early pregnancies and teenage pregnancies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have many girls with potential but their talents are not nurtured. That is why we are on a crusade to teach these girls the disadvantages of teenage pregnancies and early marriages,\u201d said Baluti.<\/p>\n
She said adolescent pregnancies and early marriages are the cause of various socio-economic challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cEarly child bearing and early marriages poses serious consequences to the health of and development of girls. The risk of maternal death and disability is higher among adolescents,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Head teacher for Kanjiwa Community Day Secondary School Foster Chimutu commended the police for the campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe initiative of bringing in role models to the students will inspire them. It will help them to work extra hard at school.
