{"id":36733,"date":"2016-12-02T12:13:06","date_gmt":"2016-12-02T10:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=36733"},"modified":"2016-12-02T12:13:06","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T10:13:06","slug":"african-development-bank-civil-society-organisations-agree-on-development-finance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/12\/02\/african-development-bank-civil-society-organisations-agree-on-development-finance\/","title":{"rendered":"African Development Bank, Civil Society Organisations agree on development finance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Civil Society Organisations from the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) have asked the African Development Bank (AfDB) to help strengthen governments\u2019 institutional frameworks to maximise the use of all sources of development finance.<\/p>\n<p>This comes against the background of a regional meeting the bank held with CSOs from the sadc region earlier this week in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was meant to strengthen mechanisms and grassroots support in the implementation of the bank\u2019s High Five Priorities over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Betty Chinyamunyamu of the National Smallholder Farmers\u2019 Association of Malawi (Nasfam), who spoke on behalf of other 30 participating organisations, said the meeting demonstrated the bank\u2019s appreciation of the role CSOs play in supporting and complementing government intervention.<\/p>\n<p>She added that Malawi and other CSOs have agreed to continue being a key development player that can help the bank in delivering its operational priorities for the betterment of the region and continent as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs CSOs, we would like to commend AfDB for its decision to engage us more closely than before. We welcome this as it demonstrates appreciation of our role as CSOs,\u201d Chinyamunyamu said.<\/p>\n<p>The CSOs further asked the AfDB to clearly articulate and disseminate its monitoring framework to monitor key indicators within the Sadc countries\u2019 national development frameworks.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the meeting, Zeneb Tour\u00e9, AfDB Principal Civil Society Engagement Officer, said that the meeting also exchanged the bank\u2019s strategic focus in three priority areas including energy and climate change, agriculture, and jobs for youth.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the goal of the meetings is to define and identify for each of the three priority areas, contextual actions where CSOs can contribute to deliver the bank\u2019s development agenda; and to reach a consensus on the implementation modalities.<\/p>\n<p>The Johannesburg meeting, which ended on Wednesday, is the third of a series of five regional consultations AfDB is holding with African civil society organisations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Civil Society Organisations from the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) have asked the African Development Bank (AfDB) to help strengthen governments\u2019 institutional frameworks to maximise the use of all sources of development finance.
