Students from Mzuzu University and The Polytechnic are today expected to hold national wide civil protests in all the three major cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu to force government to reopen the two colleges.<\/p>\n
The students have further warned to hold vigil at Parliament if their demands are not met. The students have organised the demonstrations with Youth and Society Organisation.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing the indefinite closure of Mzuzu University and The Polytechnic and complete failure by President Peter Mutharika\u2019s government to resolve the crisis, we have organised country wide demonstrations in Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre,\u201d reads the notice signed by Mzuzu University Students Union President Wazamazama Katatu.<\/p>\n
In Mzuzu, the marchers will assemble at Mzuzu University main gate and march to the city council where they will deliver a petition. In Lilongwe, protesters will gather at community ground and march via Mchesi, Kamuzu College of Nursing roundabout to City Centre and deliver their petition at Parliament. In Blantyre, they will march from Total Filling Station and march via Chichiri to Blantyre City Council.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe shall start our activities at 9 am and we ask the protesters to put on red colour,\u201d Katatu said.<\/p>\n
Youth And Society Executive Director, Charles Kajoloweka, also confirmed the protests.<\/p>\n
Last week, the three institutions held a news conference in Lilongwe where they announced their intention to hold the demos.<\/p>\n
They argued that they were forced to hold the protests because of discontent with insufficient political will and lack of leadership in dealing with the current academic crisis by President Mutharika and his administration as partly unveiled in his statement made on November 16 during Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources congregation where he distanced himself from the current academic crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
