Malawi Under-20 National Football Team\u2019s Gerald Phiri-led coaching panel has dropped five Super League players from the Cosafa Youth Championship-bound squad.<\/p>\n
Azam Tigers\u2019 goalkeeper, William Thole, Silver Strikers\u2019 defender Mark Fodya, midfielder Levison Maganizo, Premier Bet Wizards\u2019 Captain Trevor Kalema and striker \u00a0Patrick Phiri have been chopped from the squad.<\/p>\n
Assistant Coach Enos Chatama insisted that the players were not dropped due to age-cheating.<\/p>\n
Chatama said they decided against including the players after consulting Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and the National Youth Football Association on some of the players\u2019 involvement in the qualifiers for 2014 African Youth Championship.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have decided to drop the players to give exposure to other players who have not played on the international stage, but they have the talent. The likes of Maganizo and Fodya were part of the Under-20 team in 2014,\u201dChatama said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Mike Mkwate of Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver\u2019s Kondwani Mwaila are the only Super League players surviving in the provisional squad.<\/p>\n
The panel is expected to announce the final squad tomorrow ahead of the team\u2019s departure for South Africa. The tournament will kick-off on December 7 and Malawi is in Group B alongside Zimbabwe and Zambia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
