{"id":36318,"date":"2016-11-26T07:21:23","date_gmt":"2016-11-26T05:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=36318"},"modified":"2016-11-26T07:21:23","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T05:21:23","slug":"lack-of-classrooms-deters-early-child-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/11\/26\/lack-of-classrooms-deters-early-child-development\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Lack of classrooms deters early child development\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lack of learning and teaching materials is hampering progress in early childhood development [ECD) education in the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to Early Child Development Project Officer at Youth Development and Productivity (Yodep) Claire Kachapira Mtila, the enrolment figures of children in ECD centres in the country is growing each day, but classrooms to accommodate the children are inadequate.<\/p>\n<p>Mtila was speaking at Chanda Primary School in senior group Kaselema in Zomba during a children\u2019s corner retreat.<\/p>\n<p>The event was organised to appreciate the work the children are doing in education centres.<\/p>\n<p>In senior group village headman Kaselema\u2019s area, there are six ECD clusters with a total<\/p>\n<p>of 300 children per cluster. The children came together to share and learn from each other.<\/p>\n<p>Mtila said early childhood development centres have proved to be effective because children are able to understand basic elements of education, before being enrolled in upper classes.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, chiefs were asked to help ECDs by engaging communities to support the children.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Kaselema pledged support to volunteers who work in the centres as they do not get monthly salary.<\/p>\n<p>Kaselema also urged his subjects to send their children to the centres for preparation before entry into higher levels of education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lack of learning and teaching materials is hampering progress in early childhood development [ECD) education in the country.
