Gift of the Givers Foundation has called on stakeholders in the country to bail out poor farmers by, among other things, providing them with farm inputs so that they can be food secure during the forthcoming year.<\/p>\n
The foundation\u2019s Agriculture Officer, Ven Kaliati, made the remarks in Mangochi when the organisation launched the distribution exercise for farmers\u2019 pack to a targeted 1,500 farmers who were affected by last year\u2019s drought in 10 districts.<\/p>\n
Kaliati said as an organisation they support the concept of empowering local people to find their own means of surviving as opposed to waiting for handouts which will make them beggars.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are concerned that more people in the country continue being affected by either floods or drought. As such, we want to empower them with farm inputs so that they can produce their own food for the future. We hope this is the best model which can help change things if adopted by various stakeholders,\u201d Kaliati said.<\/p>\n
He added that in the long term, the initiative will improve the living standards of families as well as encouraging them to be self-reliant.<\/p>\n
Among other districts, the K23 million-worth farmers\u2019 packs will benefit farmers from Blantyre, Zomba, Mangochi, Machinga, Thyolo, Chikwawa and Nsanje.<\/p>\n
One of the beneficiaries, Patuma Amini, thanked Gift of the Givers for the donation which she said will help the people fight hunger.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just hope that the rains will be favourable this year, otherwise the situation on the ground is bad considering that a lot of people did not produce enough maize to feed their families as a result of drought that affected our crops last year,\u201d said Amini.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
