All good things come to an end. Airtel Malawi Thursday pulled a shocker when it decided against renewing Netball Association of Malawi\u2019s (Nam) K360 million sponsorship after the expiry of a three-year contract.<\/p>\n
The sponsorship was for the Queens and National Netball Championship.<\/p>\n
Airtel\u2019s exit comes two weeks after the Queens achieved a surprise top-three finish at the just-ended Fast5 Netball World Series in Australia.<\/p>\n
After a review process which took some months, Thursday the company shocked the netball fraternity by announcing the end of the romance with netball.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have now come to an end of the contract and Airtel, believing we have achieved the medium to long-term objectives of the sponsorship. We believe leaving on such a high note will pave way for other willing sponsors to support the sport and take it to another level as well as afford other sports sectors in the country the chance to flourish from our support,\u201d reads part of Airtel\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was out of our immerse belief that the level of the quality and skill of the sport had so much potential to grow and become greater than it was at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n
On arrival from Australia, the company spoiled the Queens\u2019 players and officials with K500,000 each in appreciation for finishing third at the Fast5 tournament.<\/p>\n
Before the team\u2019s trip to Australia, the company released K14.4 million.<\/p>\n
Nam President, Rosy Chinunda, Thursday reserved her comment on the issue whereas Director of Sports in the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Jameson Ndalama, asked for time before commenting on the matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
