Mohamed is the current Kenya\u2019s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya\u2019s Cabinet Secretary for Mining Dan Kazungu held discussions with President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday at Kamuzu Palace.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a news conference later, Kazungu said Mutharika assured him that Malawi will give the request the utmost consideration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Mutharika agreed that Ambassador Doctor Amina Chawahir Mohamed will be a good candidate because of her knowledge and passion for women and gender issues. Amina has a vision for women agenda. President Mutharika said he will sit with government and will give feedback with utmost consideration,\u201d Kazungu said.<\/p>\n<p>Kazungu said President Uhuru Kenyatta has also sent other envoys to the other parts of Africa for the same mission. He said, so far, all the 19 countries in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) have endorsed Mohamed.<\/p>\n<p>President Kenyatta justifies his choice for Mohamed for the AU position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, in recognition of our obligation and commitment to support the African agenda, I am proud to offer Dr. Amina Mohamed for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), a position currently held by Her Excellency Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma of South. In this regard, my administration submitted the candidature of Ambassador Amina Mohamed for consideration at the African Union Summit in January,\u201d says Kenyatta in his statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed is a legal expert with a Bachelor and Master of Laws degrees from the University of Taras Shevchenko University Kiev, Ukraine (1985); then part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). She also holds a postgraduate in law from the Kenya School of Law, and a postgraduate diploma in international relations from the University of Oxford. She is also a United Nations Institute for Training and Research Fellow.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed is the serving Chair of the 10th World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial Conference which is the topmost decision-making body of the WTO (2015-2017); the President of the 14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) (2016-2020); and the Co- Chair of the Ministerial Segment of the Sixth Tokyo International Conference of Africa\u2019s Development Summit (2016-2019).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is an excellent strategist and a visionary leader with a career spanning over 30 years in public and foreign service, and international diplomacy covering a broad spectrum of domestic and international assignments,\u201d reads part of her profile.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenya has asked Malawi to support the former\u2019s candidate, Amina Mohamed, for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) at the January 2017 summit.
