Poetry Association of Malawi (Pam) has said it is reviewing its constitution which it said is outdated.<\/p>\n
Pam\u2019s Secretary General, Paul Sezzie, confirmed yesterday of the intended move.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe constitution we have at the moment is no longer relevant to the current situation and we will have a two-day sitting of the executive to work on the constitution,\u201d Sezzie said.<\/p>\n
He however, said that the draft constitution is already ready and that all what remains is to make a few improvements before consulting lawyers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should be meeting if all goes well on November 18 and 19. Amongst the issues in the draft is that of the social welfare of poets, we have had cases where our members get sick but as Pam we need to do something and give out support,\u201d Sezzie said.<\/p>\n
He also revealed that since Pam got registered in 1997, the constitution has never been reviewed and that it was worrying that the membership still stands at K10.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Sezzie has also said that Pam although it does not have powers, plans to regulate some of the poetry shows in order to maintain sanity but also bring about quality.<\/p>\n
The move follows complaints from some of the poetry lovers that some of the poetry shows happening on the ground lack substance.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is one way we can bring poetry back to its top position, bring the vibrancy back as we do not want a situation where the shows are becoming a monotony,\u201d said Sezzie.<\/p>\n
He said that the new executive led by President Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa wants to create space where people should be hungry with poetry.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese days everyone is out hosting poetry shows without following the right channels as a result we are diluting the good that is in poetry.
