{"id":35354,"date":"2016-11-11T10:30:28","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T08:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=35354"},"modified":"2016-11-11T10:30:30","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T08:30:30","slug":"cecafa-participation-hangs-in-the-balance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/11\/11\/cecafa-participation-hangs-in-the-balance\/","title":{"rendered":"Cecafa participation hangs in the balance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The possibility of Malawi National Football Team participating in this year\u2019s Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Challenge Cup hangs in the balance.<\/p>\n<p>Football Association of Malawi\u2019s (Fam) outgoing General Secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, yesterday said the participation in the tournament, scheduled for Kenya later this month, was not automatic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are supposed to apply for participation and the Cecafa governing body approves. However, we have not sent the application, but we will do so. Therefore, it would be too early to mention whether we are participating or not,\u201d Nyirenda said.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, suggested that it would be insignificant if the team fail to participate in the competition as they will play in the African Nations Championship (Chan) in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe K33 million our national team gets as its funding is not enough to manage the team in the Cecafa and later at Chan,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda are the defending champions of the Cecafa Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, Sudan were supposed to host the tournament but they withdrew due to financial issues.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi, which crashed out in the quarterfinals of last year\u2019s edition after losing 2-0 to Uganda in Ethiopia, last won the cup in 1988.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The possibility of Malawi National Football Team participating in this year\u2019s Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Challenge Cup hangs in the balance.
