{"id":35258,"date":"2016-11-10T11:05:58","date_gmt":"2016-11-10T09:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=35258"},"modified":"2016-11-10T11:06:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T09:06:00","slug":"afcon-prize-hiked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/11\/10\/afcon-prize-hiked\/","title":{"rendered":"Afcon prize hiked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The stakes are now high in all continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations following the Confederation of African Football\u2019s (Caf) hiking of prize money for several competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, only Malawi National Football Team takes part in continental competitions, which will now see Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) champions pocketing US$4 million (K3 billion), up from $1.5 million (K1 billion).<\/p>\n<p>The increase is with effect from the next Afcon finals to be held in Gabon in January. The Daily Times used K729=US$.<\/p>\n<p>Champions\u2019 League and Confederations\u2019 Cup kings will now be receiving US$2.5 million (K1.8 billion), and US$1.25 million (K911 million) respectively, up from $1.5 million (K1 billion) and US$600,000 (K437 million, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Competitions\u2019 Manager, Gomezgani Zakazaka, yesterday said none of the local clubs had shown interest in registering for the 2017 two continental competitions, whose registration window closes on November 30, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a huge boost. That is K1.8 billion for winning the Caf Champions\u2019 League after playing some 12 games. It might cost something like K700 million to participate and win a continental competition.That is a profit of over K1.1 billion. With good planning it is possible for local clubs to participate,\u201d Zakazaka explained.<\/p>\n<p>Silver Strikers\u2019 Acting General Secretary, Thabo Nyirenda, yesterday said they were hoping to participate in next year\u2019s competitions. Silver last played in an international competition in the mid 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Silver\u2019s participation will depend on either winning Fisd Challenge Cup or finishing as league runners-up. Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers are eligible as they won the 2016 Presidential and Carlsberg cups, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The domestic clubs are too poor and disorganised to embark on continental events with Big Bullets still swimming in debts incurred by the haphazard entry into the 2014 Champions\u2019 League.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to all its member associations, including Fam, Caf stated that several factors had contributed to the hike that also sees other sides, such as finalists and semifinalists, in the respective competitions receive a healthier sum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Grid has been revised upwards, taking into consideration the new agreements reached with our agenencies in charge of commercializing [sic] TV and marketing rights of Caf competitions.
