Despite the emergence of promising boxers in the country, only three seasoned pugilists appear on African Boxing Union (ABU) latest rankings.<\/p>\n
Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board is affiliated to ABU, which is also connected to World Boxing Council.<\/p>\n
In ABU\u2019s November rankings only Chimwemwe Chiotcha, Osgood Kayuni and Wilson Masamba are rated.<\/p>\n
Surprisingly, all the three are rated ninth in their respective categories.<\/p>\n
Well-known boxers such as Salimu Chazama, Chrispin Moliyati, Kudakwache Banda and Limbani Masamba are not ranked.<\/p>\n
Ironically, Wilson Masamba is rated in lightweight category and not in his customary featherweight section.<\/p>\n
According to the rankings, Masamba is ninth in the lightweight category which is vacant.<\/p>\n
South Africa\u2019s Xolisani Ndogeni is the first contender for the belt.<\/p>\n
Chiotcha is also rated ninth in middleweight category (73kgs) whose champion is Moez Fhima of Tunisia.<\/p>\n
Kayuni is also ninth in super lightweight (63.5 kgs) and the belt is vacant whereas Warren Joubert of South Africa is the number one contender.<\/p>\n
Masamba said it was sad that some information regarding their bouts was missing on boxrec.com, a website that keeps records for boxers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my case, I think some five bouts were not updated. I cannot blame the Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board because previously, the information was sent by the other body and they were not updating it regularly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Masamba said they need to fight rated boxers from other countries to improve their ranking.<\/p>\n
Local match-maker, Steve Mawenzi Msiska, advised promoters, managers and boxers to avoid accepting boxing offers before evaluating the consequences.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll the three boxers, who appear in the list, fought against Tanzanian boxers and their points increased. By losing in Namibia, our boxers lose valuable points. You can also see that no Zimbabwean is appearing on the list. This should send a message to the boxing fraternity,\u201d Msiska said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur boxers should not just jump to take fights. Their camps should not just go for money. Local boxers, who are not on the ranking, should try to fight the ranked boxers, even those from Tanzania who mostly are ranked.\u201d<\/p>\n
Msiska said it was sad the heavyweight prospect Alick Gogodo was not ranked because of missing information on boxrec.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
