{"id":34535,"date":"2016-10-28T16:56:48","date_gmt":"2016-10-28T14:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=34535"},"modified":"2016-10-28T16:56:49","modified_gmt":"2016-10-28T14:56:49","slug":"malawi-sticks-to-international-criminal-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/10\/28\/malawi-sticks-to-international-criminal-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi sticks to International Criminal Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi has not made a decision to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Francis Kasaila has said.<\/p>\n<p>Kasaila disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday amid reports that South Africa has commenced the process of withdrawing its membership from the court.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the African Union backed a proposal by Kenya to withdraw from the court during a two-day summit in February citing what they called the court\u2019s unfair targeting of African leaders as the reason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe African Union only suggested that the African states leave the court but member states will make their independent decisions on the matter. It was not an order but a proposal. There is a difference because we have our sovereign powers,\u201d Kasaila said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Malawi will not be pressured to leave the ICC by its neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>ICC, among other African leaders, tried Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy Vice William Ruto as well as former Liberian president Charles Taylor<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s decision comes after the country ignored the ICC\u2019s warrant of arrest for Sudanese President, Omar Hassan Al Bashir.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi has not made a decision to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Francis Kasaila has said.
