Former Mamelodi Sundowns\u2019 Malawian midfield stalwart, Chancy Gondwe, has congratulated the South African side for winning the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League title.<\/p>\n
Gondwe formed a formidable combination with countryman, Ernest Mtawali, at Sundowns in the late 1990. Striker Cedrick Nankhumwa and Kennedy Malunga also starred for the Pretoria giants.<\/p>\n
\u201cSouth African clubs are there in Caf competitions every year. We can borrow a leaf from them. Sundowns have won the continental title and the same can happen to a Malawian club if we compete at that level every year,\u201d Gondwe explained.<\/p>\n
Gondwe advised teams to hatch long-term plans if they are to win continental honours such as the Champions League.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember our officials telling us from time to time that they were building a team that would win a continental title one day. They always asked us to aim high and dream big if we wanted to keep playing for Sundowns,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
South African President, Jacob Zuma, has since congratulated the champions who have become the second South African side to win the title after Orlando Pirates in 1995.<\/p>\n
Sundowns\u2019 owner and President, Patrice Motsepe, announced that the players will share the championship prize of K1.2 billion (US$1.5 million). Sundowns lifted the championship after defeating Egypt\u2019s Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate over two legs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
