{"id":34232,"date":"2016-10-24T10:03:05","date_gmt":"2016-10-24T08:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=34232"},"modified":"2016-10-24T10:03:06","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T08:03:06","slug":"dassu-trust-reaches-out-to-360-orphans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/10\/24\/dassu-trust-reaches-out-to-360-orphans\/","title":{"rendered":"Dassu Trust reaches out to 360 orphans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least 360 orphans are facing acute food shortage and medicine at Gonawambo Orphanage Centre in Traditional Authority Nkalo in Chiradzulu District.<\/p>\n<p>Gonawambo Orphanage Centre Manager, Richard Sinjani, supports the children despite having limited resources.<\/p>\n<p>At first, the orphanage was enjoying financial assistance from an Australian donor but since he pulled out, it has been struggling to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the 30 students it sent to secondary schools have pulled out due to financial problems.<\/p>\n<p>With a food crisis currently sweeping the country, life is no longer rosy for the 360 orphans. They are failing to attend classes because of hunger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation is worrying. We are facing famine this year. We have no food to feed these children. Last week we had no food. Children did not attend classes. It would appear \u2018hungry season\u2019 has intensified, we are facing starvation,\u201d Sinjani said.<\/p>\n<p>The orphanage is also facing drug shortage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes we need drugs like cough syrup to give to the children but we can no longer afford to buy them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, on Saturday the children had a sigh of relief when AY Dassu Trust donated 500 kilogrammes of meat, confectioneries bathing and washing soap to the orphanage worth K1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>The donation was presented by the Trustees\u2019 Chairperson Timothy Chirwa.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was touched by the suffering of the children and when they were asked for assistance they did not hesitate to assist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not a political organisation. We are here to donate these items because we felt duty bound to do so after we were asked by orphanage trustee Mr Jackson Gomani,\u201d Chirwa said.<\/p>\n<p>Chirwa also promised that the Trust will shortly assist the orphanage with maize flour, beans and also maintain the borehole which supplies water to the orphanage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy next week we will send a technician to assess the problem of the borehole,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving the items, Sinjani thanked AY Dassu Trust for the gesture and said this would alleviate the children\u2019s suffering.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 360 orphans are facing acute food shortage and medicine at Gonawambo Orphanage Centre in Traditional Authority Nkalo in Chiradzulu District.
