Government has launched the National Environmental Action Plan that gives guidelines on the management of the environment along catchment areas in the country.<\/p>\n
This comes at a time the country is facing several environmental challenges like soil erosion and deforestation, among others.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the launch of the plan in the area of Traditional Authority Kunthembwe in Blantyre, Team Leader in the Department of Land Resources Conservation, Joseph Kanyangalazi, said the guidelines are aimed at protecting the environment, help in developing natural resources and enhancing biological diversity of Malawi.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe guidelines are going to be implemented by a number of stakeholders that are involved in catchment areas management be it in from government or non-governmental organisations. The guidelines will provide training to raise awareness to the stakeholders on how they can manage various catchments areas in the country,\u201d Kanyangalazi said<\/p>\n
He further said officers from different government departments will be monitoring the conservation activities and be reporting on the progress made.<\/p>\n
Minister of Agriculture George Chaponda who said the plan has been developed in fulfillment of government\u2019s constitutional responsibilities to manage the environment responsibly in order to prevent the degradation, and provide a healthy living and working environment for the people of Malawi.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou may agree with me that these challenges have degraded the catchment areas resulting into silting and drying up of rivers, floods and frequent blackouts as we can all testify. Further, these environmental issues are interlinked and they need a more integrated and coordinated approach across all aspects of natural resources management and land use to deal with them, hence a call for integrated catchments management,\u201d Chaponda said.<\/p>\n
