And being a Mothers’ Day show and the organisers announcing that the first 10 women to enter would receive wrappers (chitenje), many women came early.

It was a platform that offered mothers a chance to show their dance moves as some even took to the stage to join some of the artists.

Some mothers even said they have never been to Robins Park let alone attending such gospel shows and that this was the first time.

“I have never been here but I would like to thank my daughter, who took me to this show. I have enjoyed and again being those who came early I have been decorated with a chitenje,” said Agnes Pensulo, who came all the way from Chigumula.

Pensulo also said the show gave her a chance to watch some of the gospel artists live adding that most of them “she only listens to their songs through the local radio stations.”

Some even had difficulties to mention names of the artists who had impressed them on the day.

The toast of the day was Miracle Moffat—daughter of the departed artist Grace Chinga—who recently launched her mother’s album Esther in the three regions, was the last to perform..

Her entry was greeted with ecstasy from the audience. Miracle dished out tracks from Esther as well as some songs from her mother’s previous albums.

Miracle has a long way to go in the gospel music arena but she is surely maturing with each show.

Her strengths are that she has a strong voice which, of course needs fine tuning, and also has some impressive dance antics. .

Earlier, there were performances from Thocco Katimba, who could not skip offering his hit Tagwiranji (Anaphiri), Kamuzu Barracks Gospel Singers who, this time, around were all clad in black suits, shifting from the traditional use of millitary attire.

The group has always impressed with their live performances which are oiled by their energy on stage something which misses in other artists’ acts.

One thing that was observed at the show was that much as gospel shows have always attracted a huge turnout, they are losing touch especially when there are too many artists to perform.

With a big line-up, artists only perform two to three songs and one would tell that others have become used and do not even have time for rehearsals to make improvements.

Backed by mostly one band, the sets were similar and the performances were predictable such that the audience has become used with some dictating songs for artists to play.

“We would like to thank people for their support. We have celebrated with our mothers who brought us to life,” Favoured Martha, real name, Martha Pingasa said.

A huge audience descended at Robins Park in Blantyre on Monday which was a Mothers’ Day holiday and they enjoyed gospel vibes during a Show dubbed Mothers Day Special.
