President Peter Mutharika last week \u2018secretly\u2019 held talks with a high-level delegation from Portuguese construction conglomerate, Mota-Engil, on the future of a $50 million (K22 billion) hotel project which the company cancelled.<\/p>\n
The company abandoned plans to construct a five-star hotel at Monkey Bay in Mangochi following resistance from communities surrounding the area.<\/p>\n
State House Press Secretary Gerald viola confirmed in an interview yesterday that Mutharika and the officials met on May 20.<\/p>\n
He, however said details of the discus s ions are confidential as the meeting took place in camera.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can only confirm that that meeting took place. That is all what the President said. I am sure at the right time the nation will be told as to what has been agreed by the two sides,\u201d said Viola.<\/p>\n
Officials from Mota-Engil were also not readily available to comment on the outcome of the meeting.<\/p>\n
But in an interview last week, Mota-Engil Malawi Public Relations Manager Thomas Chafunya confirmed that on the local level, officials from both sides have been meeting to find a lasting solution to the disagreements.<\/p>\n
He described as a good gesture Mutharika\u2019s commitment to initiate contact and dialogue.<\/p>\n
According to the agreement for the aborted plan, the company proposed to construct a world-class tourist at tract ion site comprising a five-star hotel and a golf course under Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the area of Traditional Authority Nankumba.<\/p>\n
During a recent press briefing in Lilongwe, Mutharika vowed to convince Mota-Engil to reverse the decision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
