A group calling itself \u2018Concerned Athletes and Coaches\u2019 has taken Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) to task over grey areas in the association\u2019s newly-adopted constitution.<\/p>\n
However, the domestic athletics\u2019 governing body has dismissed the group and its concerns, saying AAM does not deal with individuals or groups that are not affiliated to the association.<\/p>\n
The group, whose members include athletics\u2019 coach, Moses Mkondowe, have issues with articles such as those concerning the appointment of sub-committees.<\/p>\n
The said article 7.2 states that standing committees such as for coaches, referees, marketing and women \u201cdo not have the status of organs of AAM but have purely consultative role.\u201d<\/p>\n
Article 7.3 adds: \u201cThe Executive Committee shall have the powers to appoint other persons or committees to perform specific duties on its behalf. Such appointed committees shall be standing or adhoc and shall have purely consultative role.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, the group, in its letter addressed to AAM General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, on February 19, 2016, insisted that the Executive Committee does not have the powers to appoint people into such committees.<\/p>\n
\u201cClause 7.3 only grants the power \u201cto appoint other persons or committees to perform duties on its behalf. The use of the word other means other committees other than those listen in clause 7.2. Therefore, the allegation that the National Executive Committee has these powers is false and the exercise of these powers is unjustified and unethical,\u201d the group challenges in the three-page letter.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn addition to that the constitution is silent on regional committee officials to double in other technical committees such as coaching and officiating because it can lead to the officials taking sides when deciding results of a competition.\u201d<\/p>\n
The group also accuses the Executive Committee of failing to back up its claim that it held a meeting, from February 12 to 13 2016, with minutes.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is for these reasons that we require the Malawi National Council of Sports to intervene to ensure that all ambiguous areas of the purported constitution are amended and due process is followed to adopt this constitution,\u201d added the group.<\/p>\n
Chitembeya challenged the group as to why it did not avail itself at an AGM that adopted the new constitution.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to AAM Constitution, AAM Executive has the mandate and powers to appoint officials for all the committees.
