The Civil Society Agriculture Network (Cisanet) has said the country lacks a clear long term and inclusive vision for the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n
Cisanet\u2019s Chairperson, Rex Chapota, said over the past 52 years of the country\u2019s independence, the agriculture sector is still lagging behind compared to most of the neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe major contributing factor to this state of affairs in Malawi\u2019s agriculture is the country\u2019s failure to embrace an agriculture for development agenda as opposed to the current agriculture agenda which is more focused on food security,\u201d Chapota said<\/p>\n
Chapota further said Malawi needs to have a long term vision for the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cCisanet held two National Agriculture Policy Dialogue meetings where we noted that the country seems not to have a clear long term and inclusive vision for the agriculture sector. There is need for a vision that will guide the development of medium term frameworks like the Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (Aswap),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, George Chaponda, said his ministry is currently developing an Aswap successor-strategy.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs stakeholders in the agriculture sector, we are in the process of reviewing the current Agriculture Sector Wide Approach and developing an Aswap successor strategy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chaponda further said a National Agriculture Policy will soon be launched.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Ministry [of Agriculture] finalised the development process of the National Agriculture Policy which was recently approved by the cabinet and will be launched so,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
