In an effort to ease the shortage of water in Lilongwe City and surrounding areas, Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) has drilled eight boreholes in Lumbadzi.<\/p>\n
The project has taken the board six months to complete and, according to officials, it has cost the board K600million.<\/p>\n
The underground water that has been connected to the board\u2019s system would cater for 20, 000 people.<\/p>\n
Minister of Agriculture and Water Development George Chaponda said there is a crisis in terms of water supply in Lilongwe City and the board reacted to the situation by drilling boreholes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe water board would separate people from Lumbadzi area from having water which was being supplied from Kamuzu Dam.\u201d Chaponda said.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cThe crisis we had long time ago has now been eased and resolved. The reduction in water level in our lakes and dams has an effect on the supply of water.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chaponda said that government would embark on similar projects in which government would like to tap water from Mulanje Mountain to Blantyre.<\/p>\n
Chief Executive Officer for Lilongwe Water Board, Alfonso Chikuni, said due to water shortage, the board\u2019s commercial performance was heavily affected for the past months.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the two months our underperformance was about 21 percent, it is not the way we are supposed to operate but there is little we can do without the water. This is a relief to communities surrounding Lumbadzi,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chikuni explained that if they want to cover the whole city they need to drill over 700 boreholes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
