We will be responsible for any poor performance by these club stewards. If we have to pay fines, we would rather do so while using our own people.”

Chamangwana and Lipipa said they were against the stewards and the police, who are paid from gate collections, due to lack of transparency and clarity on their responsibility.

“We have never been allowed to verify the numbers [of police and stewards] despite paying for the security. We do not understand the area of responsibility of these two organs because any lapse in security is paid for by the clubs through fines despite the clubs paying huge sums of money to these two entities,” the letter adds.

The two teams further accused the stewards and the police of failing to apprehend perpetrators of violence “and yet stewards are able to present pictures of a “culprit” at a hearing.”

The giants also accused the two security organs of conniving with some elements to facilitate free entries, thereby depriving the teams of enough income.

In reaction, Banda said the two clubs must sign a letter of liability with the police so as to be accountable in the event of an eventuality.

“It is a national policy that issues of internal security are handled by the Malawi Police Service. This is a policy issue emanating from the constitution,” Banda said, adding that the solution lies in holding a round-table discussion with the teams.

Beatrice Mikuwa, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Southern Region Police Headquarters, yesterday said they were yet to be informed about the teams’ resolutions.

“In fact, we been invited to a pre-match meeting today [yesterday]. The teams should know that we are the only institution mandated to arrest perpetrators of violence and have them prosecuted. They should not only look at the game, but also lives and property which we protect during a game,” Mikuwa said.

In an unprecedented move, Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers have decided against hiring stewards and the police for Saturday’s TNM Super League second round match at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
