In an unprecedented move, Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers have decided against hiring stewards and the police for Saturday\u2019s TNM Super League second round match at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
In a joint letter addressed to Super League of Malawi (Sulom) General Secretary, Williams Banda, Bullets\u2019 Chairperson, Noel Lipipa, and his Wanderers\u2019 counterpart, George Chamangwana, yesterday said their fans will provide stewards to enforce security during the Blantyre derby.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe mandate Sulom to source an alternative for the police security and to make sure [that] they sign a liability clause with the new security organisation in case there is a breakdown in security on their watch,\u201d reads the letter which The<\/em> Daily Times <\/em>has seen.<\/p>\n \u201cClubs will provide 40 stewards each which we can deploy and monitor ourselves. We will be responsible for any poor performance by these club stewards. If we have to pay fines, we would rather do so while using our own people.\u201d<\/p>\n Chamangwana and Lipipa said they were against the stewards and the police, who are paid from gate collections, due to lack of transparency and clarity on their responsibility.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have never been allowed to verify the numbers [of police and stewards] despite paying for the security. We do not understand the area of responsibility of these two organs because any lapse in security is paid for by the clubs through fines despite the clubs paying huge sums of money to these two entities,\u201d the letter adds.<\/p>\n The two teams further accused the stewards and the police of failing to apprehend perpetrators of violence \u201cand yet stewards are able to present pictures of a \u201cculprit\u201d at a hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n The giants also accused the two security organs of conniving with some elements to facilitate free entries, thereby depriving the teams of enough income.<\/p>\n In reaction, Banda said the two clubs must sign a letter of liability with the police so as to be accountable in the event of an eventuality.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is a national policy that issues of internal security are handled by the Malawi Police Service. This is a policy issue emanating from the constitution,\u201d Banda said, adding that the solution lies in holding a round-table discussion with the teams.<\/p>\n Beatrice Mikuwa, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Southern Region Police Headquarters, yesterday said they were yet to be informed about the teams\u2019 resolutions.<\/p>\n \u201cIn fact, we been invited to a pre-match meeting today [yesterday]. The teams should know that we are the only institution mandated to arrest perpetrators of violence and have them prosecuted.
