After officially opening the Maison de la France and Jacaranda Cultural Centre at Mandala in Blantyre in July, the two centres have now started their operations which include French lessons.<\/p>\n
France Honorary Consul and Jacaranda Foundation Executive Director Luc Deschamps said yesterday during a press briefing that the two centres are now up and running and that they were open to individuals and companies to host different events.<\/p>\n
Deschamps said that the two centres have been opened following a vacuum in the commercial city of Blantyre as regards cultural activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was no place in the city for people to watch different events so we are now running and we want to make the two places as lively as possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said the two places have al s o come up following the closure of the French Cultural Centre now Blantyre Cultural Centre five years ago.<\/p>\n
The French Cultural Centre used to teach French lessons, hold workshops for artists as well as hold concerts involving international acts.<\/p>\n
Deschamps said they have lots of activities lined up further revealing that next year they will welcome a pop choir of 50 members from Germany and that they will also be hosting an exhibition by Kungoni Centre of Arts and Culture led by Father Claude Boucher.<\/p>\n
Daisy Belfield, Deputy Dir ector, Maison de la France & Jacaranda Cultural Centre and Poya Chapweteka, director of French studies said the French classes will start on October 10.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have French classes for children and adults and we are registered as a centre to hold International French examinations sessions for Delf & Dalf,\u201d Chapweteka said adding that they will have discounts for students and journalists among others.<\/p>\n
Belfield said they will be having activities every Friday starting tomorrow where they will be screening a French movie.<\/p>\n
\u201c We have so many activities for instance on October 14 we will be hosting Agorosso and Jacaranda Cultural Troupe, October 21 we have a German movie, October 28 we have a play titled Woman Needs by Solomonic Peacocks so we will be having a diverse lineup,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Belfield said they will be having monthly art exhibitions on their calendar adding that Friday is culture night.<\/p>\n
One of the teachers, who will be teaching French at the centre, is retired referee Bester Kalombo.<\/p>\n
Some of the members, who are in the advisory board, include McArthur Matukuta (Theatre & Spoken Word), Ellis Singano (Visual Arts) and Waliko Makhala (Music & Performing arts).<\/p>\n
Artists Singano, Agorosso and Matukuta have since welcomed the opening of the two centres saying it will help uplift the creative industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been crying for venues especially in Blantyre which could cater for all artistic fields and with Blantyre Cultural Centre still in a pathetic state, this will give artists a chance to showcase their works but also interact and link up with different stakeholders,\u201d Matukuta said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
