{"id":33144,"date":"2016-10-05T11:32:29","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T09:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=33144"},"modified":"2016-10-05T11:32:31","modified_gmt":"2016-10-05T09:32:31","slug":"mayors-house-causes-furore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/10\/05\/mayors-house-causes-furore\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor\u2019s house causes furore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mzuzu City Council has said it needs about K20 million to renovate the official residence of the city\u2019s Mayor which is currently in dilapidated state.<\/p>\n<p>Since being elected to the mayoral post, William Mkandawire has been living in a rented house for which the council pays monthly rentals of K200,000.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview on Tuesday Chief Executive Officer, Macloud Kadam\u2019manja, said the Mayor\u2019s official house which was once sold in dubious circumstances\u2014needs serious renovations before it can be occupied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not have a befitting house for him. We managed to fight for the house in court after we realised it was wrongly sold,\u201d Kadam\u2019manja said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cNow we have paid back the money to the one who bought it and we are only waiting for a full council meeting to decide whether to demolish and build another structure or carry out maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the full council meeting on Monday, the house was a subject of debate between councillors and secretariat because the latter allowed a tenant to occupy the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not see any reason why we should be lenient with the tenant. He took us to court and claimed a lot of money because we wanted our house back\u201d queried Leonard Njikho, Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City.<\/p>\n<p>The councillors also pressured the secretariat to speed up the process of establishing the by-laws before their term ends in 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mzuzu City Council has said it needs about K20 million to renovate the official residence of the city\u2019s Mayor which is currently in dilapidated state.
