{"id":33135,"date":"2016-10-05T11:22:38","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T09:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=33135"},"modified":"2016-10-05T11:22:39","modified_gmt":"2016-10-05T09:22:39","slug":"broken-sewer-lines-foul-blantyre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/10\/05\/broken-sewer-lines-foul-blantyre\/","title":{"rendered":"Broken sewer lines foul Blantyre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Broken sewer tanks that result in the spillage of waste have become common in Blantyre City causing some areas to produce a revolting stench, residents have complained.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, there have been cases of spillages in the middle of the town and in some residential areas.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent case is one which residents of houses near Central Medical Stores Trust offices in Blantyre who have been forced to live with broken sewers making streams close to their houses for three months.<\/p>\n<p>The residents said they have reported the matter to Blantyre City Council but the council has only provided temporary solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA number of times that we have contacted [Blantyre City Council] officials we were told to move out as the best solution, saying the temporary measures the council is providing to us are the best they can do,\u201d one of the residents said.<\/p>\n<p>But the council\u2019s Public Relations Manager, Antony Kasunda, argued that the council works on a problem depending on when it was reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people can claim to have reported about the issue three months ago but what I can tell you is that we work on issues the moment they are reported,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the sewer system that is currently in place is the one that was used when the city\u2019s population was estimated at 200, 000 but now is estimated close to one million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a question of when we are going to put to an end to the sewer system problems, even if we got the money today, the work will start immediately. However, as a council, we are trying to source funds so that by and by we should be able to tackle the problem once and for all,\u201d Kasunda said.<\/p>\n<p>Kasunda further said among the four main sewage systems in the city, only two are functional though not to their fullest capacity and he was quick to blame vandalism as contributing to the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we come up with certain measures to curb the problems, these people who do not wish the city good, vandalise [pipes], so again its not just the council not doing its job but some of the people are on the forefront hindering development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Broken sewer tanks that result in the spillage of waste have become common in Blantyre City causing some areas to produce a revolting stench, residents have complained.
