{"id":33055,"date":"2016-10-04T11:06:29","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T09:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=33055"},"modified":"2016-10-04T11:06:30","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T09:06:30","slug":"us-peace-corps-director-visits-malawi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/10\/04\/us-peace-corps-director-visits-malawi\/","title":{"rendered":"US Peace Corps director visits Malawi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Director of the United States Peace Corps, Carrie Hessler-Radelet, is in the country to engage government leaders, civil society organisations and American Peace Corps volunteers across Malawi as well as to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Peace Corps response programme.<\/p>\n<p>US Ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer said she is delighted to welcome to Malawi Hessler-Radelet.<\/p>\n<p>She said more than 2,840 American Peace Corps volunteers have served in Malawi since the programme was established in 1963.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeace Corps volunteers have made an outstanding contribution to Malawi\u2019s development and built immeasurable goodwill between the people of Malawi and the United States of America,\u201d Palmer said.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press statement from the American Embassy, the Peace Corps response programme sends experienced American professionals to undertake short-term, high-impact service assignments in communities around Malawi and the world.<\/p>\n<p>During their service, volunteers work with their Malawian communities on projects in education, the environment and health, including serving as physician and nurse educators through the Global Health Service Partnership.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently 129 Peace Corps volunteers serving in Malawi.
