The incident that happened during the eight-round non-title bout between Osgood Kayuni and Wilson Masamba at Robins Park in Blantyre last Saturday is a shame to Malawi boxing.<\/p>\n
There have been conflicting statements after Kayuni was declared the winner by the ring side announcer, only to change a few minutes later that it was Masamba.<\/p>\n
According to the score cards by the three judges, Masamba won 77-76, 78-77 and 79-78.<\/p>\n
These boxers have the fine talent and they are our super heroes, no doubt about that, and it is not surprising that they had a tight score.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, this controversy left everybody in total confusion and the situation nearly degenerated into total chaos due to what the boxing authorities described as a mathematical error.<\/p>\n
Of course, the Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board said the mathematical error was made by one of the improvised jurors.<\/p>\n
But the million dollar question is how could they trust someone with a questionable pedigree to handle such a sensitive matter?<\/p>\n
Such errors usually come at a cost and I was not surprised that Kayuni\u2019s manager, Olusegun Kapanga slapped one of the judges after the press conference, an action which is regrettable in as far as sports is concerned.<\/p>\n
That action cannot be condoned and Kapanga should be remorseful for that action.<\/p>\n
It is sad that such a mathematical error spoiled a well-organised boxing contest by Mulanje Last Boxing Promotion. I have never watched such a well-decorated boxing event on the domestic scene.<\/p>\n
I did not expect Mulanje Last Boxing Promotion Managing Director, Mike Chitenje, the man we shared our childhood in Chitawira Township in Blantyre in the early 1980s, could organise such a brilliant boxing event.<\/p>\n
It is my sincere hope that MPBCB has learnt a lesson from this. Boxing is an emotive sport and it is unheard off to be messing up such a reputable contest just like that.<\/p>\n
These are the ghosts which MPBCB needs to exorcise if they have to win respect of the boxing pundits.<\/p>\n
It is my sincere hope that this is the last time such madness is happening in boxing. Authorities need to be more serious and organised during such events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
