As a way of reviving Malawi National Hockey Team, Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) has appointed a head coach and his assistant.<\/p>\n
Ham General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, said on Monday that the decision was in line with their strategic plan to ensure that Malawi participates in international competitions.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs per our constitution, Ham Board as the appointing body, convened on September 22 2016 and appointed Geoffrey Biya as the National Coach and Allan Pinheiro as the National Assistant Coach,\u201d Thindwa said.<\/p>\n
The newly-appointed coaches have the task of preparing a men\u2019s national side to participate in Africa President\u2019s Cup in March 2017 in Lusaka, Zambia.<\/p>\n
The cup is open to men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams ranked eighth and below in Africa.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhoever shall win this tournament in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s competition, will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations the same year. There are seven countries that qualify automatically namely Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Biya, who is also coach for Genetrix Hockey Team, welcomed the appointment, saying he was ready for the task.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe it is God\u2019s time. It is a big task. However, the task needs the support from all stakeholders in the hockey fraternity, since it has been 17 years of our absence in international competitions. We need thorough training so that we can improve our fitness, coordination and style of play,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The new coach said he will draw up a programme before commencing training.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe players will be selected based on their performance, dedication and discipline. We need players who can fight and are ready to die for their country\u2019s team,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
