{"id":32325,"date":"2016-09-22T11:27:02","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T09:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=32325"},"modified":"2016-09-22T11:27:03","modified_gmt":"2016-09-22T09:27:03","slug":"malawi-signs-climate-change-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/09\/22\/malawi-signs-climate-change-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi signs climate change agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday said Malawi is keen to address the issue of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters in New York, USA, after signing the Climate Change Treaty, Mutharika said there is need for the country to have a way of tackling the issue of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue of climate change to countries like Malawi is a serious one,\u201d he said, adding that it is for this reason his government is coming up with a legal framework to address climate change issues.<\/p>\n<p>He said if the country is not careful, it will continue to suffer effects of natural calamities such as droughts that often result in food shortages. Stressing the need for the country to address climate change issues in earnest, Mutharika said Malawi is one of the countries mostly prone to effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw how the country was affected by drought and its consequences,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On the treaty, Mutharika said it is an important one as it obliges signatory countries to cut carbon emissions, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Mutharika signed the treaty at UN Headquarters in the presence of the Under Secretary General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, Miguel de Serpa Soares.<\/p>\n<p>Mutharika is in the USA attending the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) which began on Tuesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday said Malawi is keen to address the issue of climate change.
