Ministry of Health has said it is receiving a lot of requests from parents to have their children circumcised soon after birth at most of its facilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn response to this demand, we are intending to work on the Standard Operating Procedures. We will eventually roll out this service but as of now, we only provide circumcision upon a parent\u2019s request and not necessarily to newborn babies,\u201d explained the ministry\u2019s Spokesperson, Adrian Chikumbe.<\/p>\n
He said this in reaction to reports that a randomised trial of early infant circumcision done at Rakai Health sciences project in rural Uganda has proved to prevent HIV transmission in children\u2019s life later on and prevent them from developing urinary tract infections.<\/p>\n
One of the researchers on the project, Edward Kankaka, said their findings suggest registered nurse midwives could be a useful untapped resource for early infant circumcision in Uganda and similar settings.<\/p>\n
The Ugandan trials were done with support from the United Nation\u2019s Children Fund (Unicef).<\/p>\n
\u201cEarly infant male circumcision, according to health experts, avoids the risk of premature resumption of sexual activity before complete wound healing observed in men after circumcision\u2026 it also provides protection from infant male urinary tract infections among others,\u201d reads part of the Uganda network information published on Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) truth Google group for journalists and advocates.<\/p>\n
It further says early infant male circumcision is technically simpler, safer and less expensive compared to medical circumcision performed in older children or adults.<\/p>\n
Medical circumcision reduces HIV incidence in men by 50 \u2013 60 percent.<\/p>\n
It has been recommended by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV\/Aids (UNAIDS), as a major component of HIV prevention strategies in 14 priority countries in east and southern Africa, including Malawi with high rates of HIV and low prevalence of medical circumcision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
