Stakeholders in the Northern Region have called for political will among leaders if the battle against cancer of the cervix is to be won.<\/p>\n
This came up during a fundraising luncheon in Mzuzu over the weekend organised by Kuwala Health Media (Kuhem), aimed at raising resources towards the cause.<\/p>\n
The organisation\u2019s Secretary, Solomon Chomba, bemoaned that government has for a long time invested a lot of resources in the fight against HIV and Aids at the expense of other killer diseases.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith HIV there is antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people to live longer, but there is no such a thing with cervical cancer. What awaits a patient is just death. So why don\u2019t we endeavour in raising awareness and invest to screen our women for the disease?\u201d queried Chomba.<\/p>\n
He stressed on the need of drawing programmes and coming up with projects specifically aimed at fighting the disease which is caused by the human papilloma virus type 16 and 18.<\/p>\n
Chomba said that in the last six years of its operations, Kuhem has noticed that raising awareness about the disease is not a solution in itself if hospitals continue to suffer from inadequate medical equipment for screening and consequent cryotherapy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is time we all took this silent killer seriously for the sake of our women, the good thing is that the basing equipment that we need is locally found. So let\u2019s join hands,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Guest of honour to the event, Leonard Njikho, who is Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City, hailed Kuwala for the initiative, and thus assured patrons of government\u2019s commitment to dealing with cancer-related health problems.<\/p>\n
