{"id":32136,"date":"2016-09-19T16:28:25","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T14:28:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=32136"},"modified":"2016-09-19T16:35:37","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T14:35:37","slug":"former-inspector-general-mary-nangwale-to-be-laid-to-rest-tomorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/09\/19\/former-inspector-general-mary-nangwale-to-be-laid-to-rest-tomorrow\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Inspector General Mary Nangwale to be laid to rest on Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Inspector General (IG), of Police, Mary Nangwale, who passed on Sunday morning at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital will be laid to rest in a military ceremony on Tuesday, at Katimba CCAP Cemetery in Limbe.<\/p>\n<p>Elivey Chirwa, sister to the late Nangwale told <em>The Daily Times <\/em>that Nangwale passed on after a long battle with kidney failure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe may have had the problem for four years because it started when she was in UK [where she was serving at the Malawi Embassy),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005 Nangwale, became the first and so far the only woman to serve as the IG of Malawi Police but when Parliament rejected her appointment, she proceeded to serve as the First Secretary for Political Affairs at the Malawi Embassy in UK.<\/p>\n<p>Her remains will be taken from College of Medicine to Chirwa\u2019s residence in Kanjedza.<\/p>\n<p>And Chirwa said her family has lost a pillar in Nangwale. She said the family will miss her love, kindness and constructive advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will miss her love, kindness and constructive advice she always gave us. When she was sick, it was bad enough but now it\u2019s worse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>And Ekam Siula, Nangwale\u2019s cousin, said Nangwale was the IG of Police to the nation but to them she was a mother, grandmother, cousin, sister and many more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWherever Mary was, she was laughing. She was laughing with elders and children alike. When we visited her at the hospital, it was her who was making us laugh,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>IG of Police, Lexten Kachama said Nangwale was not a stranger to anyone in the country because of her illustrious career of over 30 years in the service rising from the rank of Constable to Inspector General.<\/p>\n<p>He said police officers in the country learnt a lot from Nangwale\u2019s dedicated service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was a tender-hearted and very professional officer. We learnt a lot from her vast experience and expertise while she was in the service and even after she left. \u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kachama said police service and the entire nation have lost immeasurably with the passing of Nangwale.<\/p>\n<p>Nangwale was born on March 27, 1953 and is survived by two children and four grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>She hailed from Siula Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba.<\/p>\n<p>When she retired from police service, Nangwale became a pastor of the Living Waters Church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Inspector General (IG), of Police, Mary Nangwale, who passed on Sunday morning at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital will be laid to rest in a military ceremony on Tuesday, at Katimba CCAP Cemetery in Limbe.
