The school dropout rate for girls in Thyolo has gone down to 20 percent from 24 percent according to the district\u2019s education manager.<\/p>\n
Thyolo District Education Manager (Dem), Charles Sakwata, said the figures are for secondary schools in the district.<\/p>\n
Sakwata made the remarks during a ceremony whereby the Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (Creccom) presented a cheque of K250, 000 to 16 needy students at Nagwengwele Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) to carter for their tuition fees for the 2016\/2017 academic year.<\/p>\n
According to Sakwata, most of the factors fuelling dropout rate for girls in the district can easily be checked.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of the times it is lack of interest by parents to send children to school, poverty, culture and early marriages fuelling dropout rates in the district. Seemingly, most of the low-income earners in the district\u2014which are the majority\u2014look down upon themselves that they cannot send their children to school. That is wrong. All we need are concerted efforts from both government and the corporate world to increase the civic education campaigns,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
During the ceremony, 10 community day secondary school students were rewarded with learning materials each, for doing well during the last Junior Certificate of Education examinations.<\/p>\n
Other awardees were 30 students from Nagwengwele Primary School who have been selected to various government secondary schools after passing the Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education Examinations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
