Mpamba Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) students in Nkhata Bay went on a rampage on Monday and blocked every government vehicles passing through the M5 Road in reaction to an industrial action that their teachers are staging.<\/p>\n
The Daily Times <\/em>understands that the school has since been closed indefinitely pending a resolution to the teachers\u2019 concerns.<\/p>\n Angered by their teachers\u2019 act ion, the learners stormed the road in large numbers and searched for every official vehicle.<\/p>\n \u201cThe students at the school were furious that they had paid school fees but were not learning. They stormed the road and looked for every official vehicle they could find but could not proceed with any action following police intervention,\u201d said a source.<\/p>\n Nkhata Bay District Education Manager (Dem), Mzondi Moyo, denied that the school has been closed.<\/p>\n \u201c[The school has] not closed. Learners simply [were] told to wait at home and some learners are still at school,\u201d said Moyo through a text message.<\/p>\n Moyo could not, however, indicate why the students were sent home and how they had planned to handle the issue of boarding learners.<\/p>\n Our source, however, indicate that Moyo intervened when she called the students to school hall for a meeting.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the end of the meeting, the Dem directed that the school be closed indefinitely until the sit-in ends,\u201d said the source.<\/p>\n For students that come from faraway places, according to the source, the Dem has directed that they apply to stay on campus pending an end to the teachers\u2019 sit-in.<\/p>\n When contacted, Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson Sergeant, Ignatius Esau, confirmed the incident but could not give details.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are waiting for officers who were sent to the scene to give us the details,\u201d Esau said.<\/p>\n MoEST Spokesperson, Manfred Ndovi, said in cases of a higher risk, even a school head teacher has the mandate to close a school to avoid escalating a situation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Mpamba Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) students in Nkhata Bay went on a rampage on Monday and blocked every government vehicles passing through the M5 Road in reaction to an industrial action that their teachers are staging.
