Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) has threatened to revoke titles for three boxers for various reasons.<\/p>\n
The decision might see lightweight champion, Chrispin Moliyati, middleweight champion, Brian Mwando, and recently defeated welterweight champion, Kudakwache Nkhakamila Banda, stripped of their belts.<\/p>\n
Moliyati risks losing his lightweight belt for failing to defend it within the mandatory three-month period whereas Kudakwache and Mwando\u2019s cases are complicated.<\/p>\n
Kudakwache\u2019s mandatory title defence period will expire next month.<\/p>\n
However, he will not be allowed to defend the belt after losing through a technical knockout to Limbani Masamba in the eighth round of a non-title contest at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe last Sunday.<\/p>\n
Recently, Mwando lost in a similar manner to Felix Mwamaso.<\/p>\n
It means that both boxers will have to wait for three months before returning to the ring, thereby making it impossible for them to defend the belts next month.<\/p>\n
MPBCB President, Lonzoe Zimba, said they communicated to the boxers\u2019 respective stables that they risked losing their belts.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will be applying the rules in line with World Boxing Council regulations. If we do not take action, we will set a bad precedent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Zimba clarified that Moliyati, unlike Kudakwache and Mwando, will be recognised as the number one contender.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt means that Moliyati will be the first to be considered for a lightweight fight because the moment he ceases to be a champion, he is automatically named a number one contender. However, for Mwando and Kudakwache, it means the number one and two contenders will now battle for the belts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Moliyati\u2019s management stable, No Pain No Gain Boxing Promotions, Managing Director, Craig Rousseau, said it was painful that they did not get the right offers and opponents for his client\u2019s title defence.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of the opponents were ridiculous and we could have been seen as if we were fixing the fights. However, we will cooperate to ensure that Moliyati remains the lightweight champion in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mwando complained over the imminent loss of the belt.<\/p>\n
\u201cI lost a non-title fight and I am not aware of these rules. I cannot defend the belt in October because my wife [Agnes Mtimaukanena- Mwando] will also be fighting in Zimbabwe for a WBC Silver medal fight. The board should also be accommodative.
