Malawians can now proudly boast of a top football facility as the Bingu National Stadium (BNS) will be handed over to government in Lilongwe today.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Transport and Public Works, Malison Ndau, confirmed that the multi-billion kwacha Chinese government-funded stadium will be handed over to the Ministry of Sports and Culture.<\/p>\n<p>The state-of-the-art sports arena has missed several deadlines as it was dogged by fluctuations in the exchange rate of the kwacha and theft of various items such as pipes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no way we can hand over a structure that is not complete. As the minister responsible, I can proudly tell my fellow Malawians that the Bingu National Stadium is ready,\u201d Ndau said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the stadium is not available for any activities until President, Peter Mutharika, inaugurates it.<\/p>\n<p>Ndau said after the handover, the Ministry of Sports will make arrangements as to when Mutharika will open the stadium officially.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Sports spokesperson, Christopher Mbukwa, said the new stadium will relieve pressure on Kamuzu Stadium, which hosts high-profile matches.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes at a time when Football Association of Malawi had indicated that it would ask government to close Kamuzu Stadium because the lifespan of its artificial turf expired last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The long wait is finally over.
