About 1,020 families that are facing hunger in Traditional Authority (T\/A)Chimombo in Nsanje have started receiving K20, 000 cash every month as part of the Emergency Food Aid Project being implemented by Churches\u2019 Action in Relief and Development (Card).<\/p>\n
The beneficiaries will receive the cash for the next three months.<\/p>\n
The project, which is worth K60 million, was launched on Friday in Nsanje and is aimed at enhancing the communities\u2019 resilience in the wake of the drought.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the launch, T\/A Chimombo said about 95 percent of the people in his area have no food.<\/p>\n
He said most of the families have not harvested in the past two years due to the floods and dry spells.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost families here are going days without food as they did not realise yields from the fields in almost two consecutive years, so this project will accord them an opportunity of at least buying food for their families,\u201d Chimombo said.<\/p>\n
He therefore warned the families, especially men, against using the money for other things other than buying food, saying any one found will be punished and removed from the list of beneficiaries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a security forum in this area and with my village heads we will use it to track how the money is being used by individual families to prevent anyone from using the money on less important things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Card Executive Director, Melton Luhanga, said the project will be implemented together with various others in the area including irrigation farming to ensure sustainability.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs an organisation, we are implementing other programmes in the district, so this new project will complement those efforts to reduce the impact of the drought and help improve household food security until the next growing season, that is why it [the project] will be implemented for three months,\u201d Luhanga said.<\/p>\n
