This, we think, was a problem of both the students as well the lecturers,” Musisi said.

Musisi also said that most students were presented to sat for the examination when they were not ready.

“We have requirements that students are supposed to go through but some colleges did not meet all the requirements to the extent that even though we believed what they said, we saw some anomalies after verification exercise. These are some of the contributing factors,” she said.

Cham Executive Director, Mwai Makoka, said stakeholders had a meeting on the new curriculum but he also blamed the results on the general standards of education in the country.

“The standard of education in the country has gone down especially in secondary schools, hence at tertiary level is where you can now see the consequences. These are students who at secondary passed with good grades but here you tend to wonder how they fail.

“The other challenge is lack of funding. Population of students is growing in these colleges but we do not have enough hospitals for them to do practicals. The end result is that they are forced to be deployed in district hospitals sometimes very far where accommodation, food and transportation are a challenge. These are some of the things that need to be looked into,” Makoka said.

Candidates from Christian Health Association of Malawi (Cham) colleges who sat for this year’s nurses and midwifery council examination have failed miserably with the failure percentage reaching a frightening 84 percent.
